Black and White Impermanence (Hei Bai Wu Chang/ Tua Di Ya Pek) Investment God of Wealth

In Chinese folklore, the Black & White Impermanence (黑白无常) were once very close friends who worked as constables in a Yamen (衙門). One day, a convict escaped while they were escorting him to another location. In order to capture the convict, they decided to split up, search and meet again later under the bridge. Due to a heavy downpour, Xie Bi An (謝必安) was delayed and couldn't make it back in time. Fan Wu Jiu (范無咎) who reached on time, waited under the bridge but because of the heavy rain the area started to flood. He refused to leave as he wanted to keep to his word to Xie Bi An (謝必安) and eventually drowned to death. When Xie Bi An (謝必安) finally arrived, he was devastated to find his friend’s corpse. Unable to withstand the grief and guilt, he hung himself. When their souls arrived at the underworld, Yan Luo Wang was so moved by their story & friendship that he made them in charge of escorting the spirits of the dead to the Underworld.

Xie Bi An (謝必安) the white guard’s name, directly translated means "Those who make amends will always be at peace". He calculates the duration of a person’s life and is often depicted as a tall fair-skinned man wearing a white robe, a tall hat (一见生财) with an abacus. He can also be seen carrying an umbrella smiling and with his tongue hanging out due to his cause of death (hanging).

While Fan Wu Jiu (范無咎) the black guard’s name, directly translated means "Those who commit crimes will have no salvation". He carries a chain and a court order to take the soul of the deceased into the Underworld. He also wears a tall hat (天下太平) and is portrayed as a short, storky, dark complexion (drowning) & stern looking man.

They are both commonly found in the City God Temple (城隍庙) and devotees worshipped them for wealth. They grant riches and winning lottery numbers to help men in need or those of virtue. On the other hand, those who led an unsavoury life will be dealt with accordingly. As the saying goes, the Good will be rewarded, and the Evil will be punished…
